Buying Tips for GCC Households

Concrete Walls Are Real

If your home has concrete block walls (most UAE / KSA villas do), here's what matters:

  • Wired backhaul beats wireless. If you have Ethernet through the house (many villas are pre-wired for TV), use Ethernet to connect the nodes — instantly better performance than wireless mesh backhaul.
  • 5 GHz punch-through > 6 GHz punch-through. 6 GHz gives 1+ Gbps speeds at close range, but 5 GHz reaches further through concrete. Place nodes where 5 GHz covers the open areas.
  • More nodes, less power per node. Three weaker nodes beat two strong nodes in a villa. Splitting coverage is more reliable than broadcasting further.
  • Avoid placing nodes near foil-backed insulation. The reflective foil in many GCC villa walls reflects Wi-Fi signals back, weakening reception.

Mesh vs Powerline: Don't Use Powerline

Powerline adapters (extending internet through electrical wiring) work in older homes but fail miserably in GCC villas. Modern electrical systems with circuit breakers degrade the signal. Stick with mesh or mesh + Ethernet backhaul.

Mesh vs Range Extenders: Mesh Wins

Range extenders cut your speed in half (every packet goes through twice). Mesh with dedicated backhaul (the second 5 GHz radio in ZenWiFi/Orbi) doesn't have this problem.

What About ISP-Provided Routers?

  • Configure primary node via app
  • Place additional nodes one at a time, waiting 2 minutes between each
  • Run speed test at each location
  • Update firmware (all systems ship with older firmware)

Common Setup Mistakes
